Man cannot live by basketball alone, so Cleveland bars and restaurants may slim down with LeBron James gone and during reconstruction of the “Q,” the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers formally known as Quicken Loans Arena. Here in Cleveland, perhaps more than other NBA cities, many question the economic impact of LeBron James’ departure to Los Angeles.  Preceding his decision announcement was the start of a two-year renovation project of the Q, leaving the big-ticket sports and entertainment venue closed for the summers of 2018 and 2019. The CAVS announced that regular season CAVS games will resume for 2018-19, but during ongoing construction.  The CAVS ...

Motion Motivates.

ACHIEVE YOUR BUSINESS GOALS USING VIDEO ON YOUR DIGITAL MENU BOARDS. Our eyes were designed from day one to see motion. Using our peripheral vision to help us spot a food source or a potential predator was the key to survival, motivating us to move – closer or further away. Today, this survival mechanism might help us in different situations but it still definitely exists. It only makes sense as a business owner to apply this same principle and give consumers what their eyes seek – a motivation to move to action. Digital menu boards provide the perfect avenue to bring motion into your business through the use of video. Using video can help ...

LEVERAGING DIGITAL MENU BOARD TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE SALES, MANAGE LABOR COSTS, AND ASSIST IN EMPLOYEE TRAINING EFFORTS. When Carolyn Conner, a franchise owner for Church’s Chicken in New Mexico, noticed that sales at each of her four locations had stagnated, she knew it was a problem she needed to address quickly. Part of the problem, she believed, was that her employees struggled with upselling at the cash register despite the time and effort she poured into training them to do so. She needed a business solution that could help her address this issue in a way that was economical and scalable for all four of her Church’s Chicken locations. ...

Restaurants and bars all over the country just closed out what was likely a profitable Cinco de Mayo weekend of serving margaritas, Corona and other colorful cocktails to revelers who may not have any cultural connection to the holiday, but who just enjoyed the good times and merriment with friends and strangers. In honor of all of the bartenders who raked in the tips over the weekend of the 5 th of May (and every weekend thereafter now that warmer weather is here), I thought I’d make a case for the untapped power in the restaurant bartender to boost profits and customers. When done right, the men and women behind the bar could possibly mean the difference ...

We wrote this blog a while back, but thought it might be relevant to a lot of you here. What are your challenges with labor? Read below and share your thoughts. You may have graduated top-of-your-class from the finest culinary institute, or you’re a home-grown chef whose killer lava cake and succulent rack of lamb are always in demand at family dinners.  Those culinary successes may not translate into a successful (read: profitable) restaurant, though. Industry experts say 60 percent of new restaurants fail within the first year, and nearly 80 percent fail before year five.  Your restaurant launch needn’t be haunted by ghosts of failed restaurants ...

Although we wish all days in the restaurant industry were full of positivity and satisfied customers, it doesn't always turn out that way. Social media has become a platform to not only share your restaurant's happy moments but a place for customers to complain, leave negative reviews, and share their opposing point of views. How should you properly address negative comments on your social media pages?   Each scenario is different and requires a different crisis management strategy, but here are some tips to consider next time you find your restaurant in the middle of a heated discussion. 1.   Acknowledge the customer on your page: ...

Over the last few years, food delivery apps have become popular in the restaurant industry. In the past, delivery was only expected for parts of the restaurant industry, such as pizza shops. Today, with the rise in companies like UberEats , GrubHub , and OrderUp , delivery service is becoming the norm across the entire restaurant industry. Customers expect it to be an option when they are searching for takeout options Should your restaurant partner with a food delivery app? How should your restaurant use a food delivery app? 1. Consider if a delivery app is on brand for your restaurant. Partnering with a food delivery ...

Let’s Talk EMV—Key Questions to Ask by Heartland July 9th, 2015 Your merchant acquirer plays a big part in your decision as to whether you should implement and roll out EMV payment acceptance . Per Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover, it is not mandatory for a business accepting credit and debit cards to implement EMV. It is also important to understand that every EMV card issued in the U.S. will continue to have a magnetic stripe, with no plans to sunset this feature. In other words, you’ll still be able to accept card payments after the October 2015 liability shift , even if you have ...

Our baby is home! Now what? When our first baby, Connor was born, we were filled with excitement and thankfulness. We were also very scared and nervous. Reality set in when we carted him out of OSU hospital and into our Subaru wagon, gingerly placing him in the not-infant-sized car seat. We felt we had already failed. His little peanut head could barely see over the car seat bar. He screamed all the way home. CONNECT is the ORA’s newborn. The pregnancy was not without complications: skeptics, operational and resource challenges. But, thanks to the delivery team; namely John Barker (understanding the value of this member benefit), along ...

We need your help to tell the story of the restaurant industry in Ohio. Why? When there's a news story about minimum wage, the first industry that gets singled out is the restaurant industry. I've read remarks such as "unfair labor practices in restaurants" and "wage theft" by foodservice operators. Doesn't this make you mad? Turn that anger into action and let's get your positive stories out there. From the people I talk to, the reason they get into the industry is varied, but people who've made it their careers love the flexible hours and being in control of making more money through excellent customer service! Furthermore, most of our part-time, ...
